Crossing the Border

Know what to expect when travelling between the U.S. and Canada:

Everyone wants their border crossing to go smoothly. The best way to make sure this happens is to know what to expect and be prepared. Here are the top tips for people crossing the US border into Canada.

1. Know What ID is Necessary:

All visitors crossing the border need a passport (or passport equivalent such as a Nexus Card, US Passport Card, or Fast/Expres Card).

2. Have ID Ready to Present to Border Officer:

Passengers should have their passports to the driver before reaching the border services booth. Don't start searching for it once you've already pulled up to the booth.

3. Declaring Your Purchased Items

Border officers will ask you for the total value of all goods purchased in the USA so tally up the total value of the goods you are bringing back into Canada before you get to the booth. That includes any items you had shipped to your US address at myUSAddress.ca. Be prepared to show all receipts. Other questions regarding the goods purchased in the US include whether you are bringing back any prohibited items such as firearms and explosives.

Once asked to pull over and pay your duties and taxes, proceed to the designated parking area and enter the customs building with your receipts. A customs officer will then review and determine what is owed. You can pay for your duties and taxes with cash, credit card and even debit cards.
